Terms of Participation
The terms everyone in the ecosystem agrees to.
Clear expectations protect participants, give host organisations confidence and keep the Capability Passport credible.
1. Scope
These terms apply to everyone who uses skill2create.org or takes part in Skill2Create activities: participants, host organisations and ventures, mentors, assessors and partners. Skill2Create is operated by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). Specific opportunities may carry additional written terms — a role brief, placement agreement or venture agreement — which apply alongside these terms.
2. Participants
- You must be at least 16 years old. Additional safeguarding measures apply to participants under 18.
- Information you give in registrations, applications and your Capability Passport must be accurate and your own.
- Applying is always free. No participant is ever asked to pay to apply, be shortlisted or be placed.
- During a placement you agree to the host's reasonable and lawful instructions, to the agreed hours and to the confidentiality terms disclosed in the role brief.
- You may withdraw from an opportunity at any time; we ask for reasonable notice so the host and other applicants are not disadvantaged.
3. Host organisations and ventures
By listing an opportunity, a host organisation confirms it will meet the Skill2Create host standards, including:
- verification of its legal identity and of the people responsible for supervision;
- a written brief with learning outcomes, meaningful work, progressive responsibility and an assessment method;
- a named supervisor, structured feedback and mentor access;
- compensation, hours, location, IP and confidentiality terms disclosed before acceptance;
- a safe environment, anti-harassment and non-discrimination commitments, and insurance where applicable;
- honest competency assessment recorded to the participant's Capability Passport;
- cooperation with Skill2Create quality monitoring, concerns and grievance procedures.
Skill2Create may decline, suspend or remove a listing or a host that does not meet these standards.
4. Mentors and assessors
Mentors and assessors give their time to review real work and validate evidence. They agree to act impartially, declare conflicts of interest, keep participant information confidential and follow the safeguarding expectations set out in section 8. Validation entries they make in a Capability Passport must reflect work they have actually reviewed.
5. Compensation and terms
Every listing states its compensation model — stipend, allowance, salary, project payment, earned income or other benefits — together with hours, duration, location and work arrangement. Where an opportunity is unpaid this must be stated plainly. The terms disclosed before acceptance are the terms that apply; changes require the participant's agreement. Skill2Create does not process payments between hosts and participants unless a specific programme says otherwise.
6. Intellectual property
Ownership of work produced during an opportunity is governed by the role brief or placement agreement, which must state it explicitly before acceptance. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, participants keep the right to describe and show the work in their portfolio and Capability Passport in a way that respects the host's confidentiality. Content on skill2create.org, including the Skill2Create name and marks, belongs to CIE or its licensors.
7. Capability Passport
The Capability Passport records verified competencies, projects, evidence and feedback. Entries made by supervisors, mentors and assessors may not be edited by the participant, but may be annotated or disputed through the grievance process. Deliberately falsifying evidence or validation is a serious breach and may result in removal from the programme.
8. Conduct and safeguarding
Everyone in the ecosystem is expected to act with honesty, respect and professionalism. Harassment, discrimination, exploitation, bullying and unsafe practice are not tolerated. Hosts and mentors working with participants under 18, or with participants in vulnerable situations, must follow our safeguarding requirements. Concerns can be raised confidentially through Report a concern.
9. Concerns and disputes
Most issues are resolved informally with the supervisor or mentor. Where that is not possible or appropriate, any party may raise a concern with Skill2Create. We acknowledge concerns within 3 working days, investigate proportionately, keep the parties informed and record the outcome. Serious safeguarding concerns are escalated immediately. Raising a concern in good faith will never disadvantage a participant.
10. Use of the platform
- Do not misuse the site: no automated scraping, attempts to gain unauthorised access, or submission of false, misleading or unlawful content.
- Listings, applications and messages may be moderated to protect users and maintain quality.
- Information on the site is provided in good faith; opportunity details are supplied by host organisations, who are responsible for their accuracy.
- We may update, suspend or withdraw parts of the site or programme; we will give reasonable notice of changes that affect active participants.
11. General
These terms are governed by the laws applicable to CIE's place of establishment, without prejudice to mandatory protections you enjoy in your own country. If any provision is found unenforceable the remainder continues to apply. We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the current version. Questions: hello@skill2create.org.
